The Course of Empire

This composition draws inspiration from the renowned series of five paintings titled 'The Course of Empire' by the acclaimed American artist Thomas Cole, illustrating the growth and fall of an imaginary city. The five stages underscore not only the influence of human activities but also the intrinsic connection between human and natural forces. Extreme prosperity forebodes the beginning of decline, this is the inevitable fate of those who disregard their symbiotic relationship with nature. Based on D chords, this piece attempts to capture the atmospheric nuances and structural essence of the painting series, while conveying the profound thematic underpinnings embedded within the narrative of it.
